Post-operative care begins minutes after surgery. The first check verifies that the flap has adhered well and that no wrinkles have formed. You are given eye drops, which you will administer from the first day after surgery in order to keep the surface smooth and regular and to prevent any inflammation.
What must I do?
- Do not rub your eyes or wear eye make-up in the first weeks following surgery.
- Do not expose your eyes to increased stress, for instance by going to the swimming pool, solarium, sauna, etc.
- Absolutely avoid sports that harbour an increased risk of injury, e.g. squash.
- Avoid air conditioning in cars, at the office or at home for a while.
- Avoid dusty and dry air.
As a rule, after two to three weeks the healing process has progressed enough that stable vision has been achieved to a great degree and the final success of the surgery can be judged.
Immediately after LASIK surgery, you will be given appointments for follow-up examinations. In special cases, for instance if you have extremely dry eyes or other complaints, deviations from the schedule may be necessary.
Regular follow-up checks are also necessary after
PRK or lens surgery. Post-operative complaints are more severe after PRK than after
LASIK or
LASEK and should, therefore, be kept under observation. Side effects can also occur after implantation of an artificial lens. Since, as a rule, both eyes are not operated on at the same time, the difference in visual acuity may cause problems seeing with two eyes (e.g. double vision) until the second eye has undergone surgery, too.
